President Jonathan
earlier today launched the National e-ID card at the Presidential Villa. Reports says the national smart identity (ID) card is
powered by international electronics payment company, MasterCard. According
to Daniel Monehin, division president for sub-Saharan Africa at
MasterCard, national ID card holders will be able to transact and receive
payments from government and individuals.
The
pilot phase of the project would see 13 million Nigerians issued with the card,
while the next phase would target over 100 million Nigerians. The project is a
partnership between MasterCard, the Nigerian National Identity Management
Commission
