NUJ CALLS FOR THE IMMEDIATE SACK OF JOSEPH MBU.
The Nigerian Union of Journalist, NUJ, has called for the immediate sack of AIG Zone 7, Mbu Joseph Mbu for abuse of office. Joseph Mbu had unlawfully arrested and detained AIT’s Amaechi Anakwue for allegedly referring to him as ‘controversial’.
The NUJ national president Mohammed Garba made the call for Mbu’s sack at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja. Amaechi Anakwue, AIT Senior Correspondent said, “I was thoroughly harassed, I was intimidated and I was detained unlawfully by the same police institution funded by tax payers money to provide security, law and order.
Amaechi Anakwue was arrested for doing his job, which entails the use of expressions to drive home a point for which he was arrested, detained, brutalized and subsequently discharged by an Abuja magistrate court. Several groups and individuals have raised their voices against what they said portend danger for democracy. The umbrella body for practicing journalists in Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalist, NUJ has lent its voice to the clamour of the immediate retirement of AIG Zone 7 Mbu Joseph Mbu.
Mohammed Garba, National President of NUJ said, “If you want to write sack, go with sack I don’t have problem because as far as we are concerned he has committed an offence to us, he has illegally arrested and detained somebody for no offence for 8 hours.” The NUJ has threatened to institute a legal action on the issue if Mbu is not sanctioned accordingly. Mohammed Garba, “In the next 7 days if there is no response we have two alternatives; to go to court and then engage on a mass protest.” The leadership of the NUJ seems to be stepping up efforts in its campaign against corruption and the culture of impunity in Nigeria as it is now calling for thorough investigation into the money for arms deal involving Nigeria and South Africa. The union has however recommended the federal government for its efforts to end insurgency in the northeast.
