The
Maiduguri International Airport was yesterday shut down again
following its brief opening on Monday, as
former Borno state Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, for whom it was opened, depart the state capital yesterday. Modu Sheriff,
flew into Maiduguri on Monday afternoon at about the time Governor Kashim Shetimma was leaving town by road, following military’s closure of the airport for all non-militarised
flights. Modu Sheriff, who spent over 24
hours in the city busied himself attending
to stream of party supporters from both All
Progressive Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the party he is now
planning to defect to. The former governor had told
journalists that he was in the state to finetune his exit from the APC, a party he said did not strike him as one that has a positive future because “the party was built around an
individual “. According to him, the PDP is the future and “any serious politician would not want to be in a sinking ship”. Unlike his previous visit that
was marred by a bomb blast that claimed a number of persons at the densely populated commercial area in Post Office on January 14, his visit on Monday and
Tuesday turned out without any incident while some residents had expected some ugly eventualities. The former governor’s flight departed the city at about 6:05pm.
