MOHAMMED CONFIRMED AS CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Justice Mahmud Mohammed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Meanwhile  the confirmation followed President Goodluck Jonathan’s letter to the parliament requesting Mohammed’s appointment to be approved to replace outgoing Justice Aloma Muhktar.

Earlier Senator Victor Ndoma-Egbe, the Leader of the Senate, had activated Rule 40 of the Senate Standing Rule to commence the screening of the new CJN.

Ike Ekeremandu, the Deputy Senate President, cashed in on the proceeding to ask Mohammed some questions.

Ekweremandu’s questions were on the need for special courts, constitutional courts and the alleged dwindling welfare of judges.

James Manager (PDP-Delta) wanted Mohammed to provide answer to alleged conflicting decisions across the country’s courts.

The senator also wanted Mohammed’s position on current fusion of the offices of Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.
